Michael Shilale Architects, LLP (MSA) are
experts in school design from early
childhood centers to higher education
buildings. They have specialized in K-12
educational environments for the last two
decades.
When Pascack Valley School needed an
architect to renovate a previously
underground telephone switching station to
a new school, MSA proved to be
right choice.
MSA’s design transforms this previously
underground building, into a bright, light
filled, learning environment.
Excavating the entire east side of brought
the classrooms to ground level and opened
windows and views to the landscape.
A dramatic 40 foot by 80 foot atrium cut
through the existing green roof created a
light filled atrium and multipurpose
space. This space serves and the center of
the school and acts as a beacon
illuminating the surrounding classrooms.
While the natural light levels will not be
enough to illuminate desktops in all
daytime conditions, the amount of daylight
and views to the atrium will be enough to
illuminate the spirits of the children
there to learn.
This 15,000 square foot buiding will
have parking on the roof. The new atrium
roof will have skylights and is perfectly
oriented for future photovoltaic panels. |
