Over 135 people attended the annual dinner of The
Rockland Municipal Planning Federation (RMPF) on March 31,
2009. The Federation holds the dinner to
celebrate a year of achievements in town planning,
to discuss new business, and elect their leaders.
The Federation chose Michael Shilale, AIA, LEED to
discuss green buildings and their impact on our
economy and environment.

The board members felt this was
an important topic to focus on at an event that
kicks off a new year of town and village planning. As building
goes forward for both new buildings and renovations
of existing buildings, Rockland is ready to be
leaders of the green movement. As Mr. Shilale
pointed out, the benefits of building a LEED
certified building or making an existing building
certified are numerous. Not only do these standards
help protect the environment and our energy resources,
but they can significantly reduce utility and
maintenance costs, as well as improving the
overall wellbeing of building inhabitants.
Mr. Shilale also spoke about what actions
governments are taking to ensure an increase in
green building and energy efficiency. He and new
RMPF board president Charles Frankel, informed guests on ways to get involved with
government advocacy and different aspects of
green planning, driving the point home that this is an
important community effort. It was agreed the
evening was a great success, with a strong sense of
solidarity among the RMPF, and the
consensus that a great deal was learned from Mr. Shilale’s informative presentation.
