New City NY -
When United Water started looking for a firm to
design an innovative, “green” water treatment
facility that would assist the company with their
long range water supply planning, Michael Shilale
Architects LLP of New City stood out. The resulting
project, the Haverstraw Water Supply Site, will be
composed of two separate buildings; an Intake
Facility located on the Hudson River bordering a
marina and residential properties, and a more remote
Treatment Facility that houses the water treatment
equipment.
The challenge: to design appropriate buildings for
each location, incorporating sustainable and
environmentally friendly elements. Michael Shilale
Architects’ preliminary renderings show the use of
the latest technology, including photovoltaic
(solar) roof panels and rain-water harvesting
mechanisms (for drinking water), as well as natural
daylight in place of artificial light.
“We were particularly keen on designing an
attractive building on the waterfront, that will be
a harmonious fit with the surrounding community”
says Michael Shilale, principal and founder of the
firm. To facilitate showing the buildings in
context, Shilale’s team put together 3D perspectives
(photo simulations) which illustrate before and
after shots of the building sites.
Sameet Master, Project Manager with United Water,
says that Shilale’s input has helped United Water
meet their immediate short term objectives:
community-and environmentally-sensitive design, as
well as giving the company long range insight on the
best way to incorporate green concepts for future
industrial facilities in other areas.
Michael Shilale AIA, LEED, along with his partner
