New City NY -
Over the past two years Michael Shilale Architects,
LLP, has harbored a striking stainless steel
sculpture of a bird about to take flight. In front
of their building on Park Avenue in New City, “Bird
Arising” is the work of Edward Walsh, a Rockland
based artist from Valley Cottage. His client list
includes Merv Griffin, a former empress of Iran and
various corporate headquarters around the country,
as well as local clients like Camp Venture’s
Holocaust Memorial and Pomona Junior High School.
Besides large scale outdoor sculpture work, Walsh
also creates interior sized sculptures, bas reliefs,
kinetic sculptures, and works on paper. “We
have been extremely fortunate to be able to have
this wonderful piece of art on display while Edward
was looking to sell it,” says Shilale, a former
chairperson of Art in Public Places of Rockland
County.
“Bird Arising,” with it’s nine foot wing span, will
be temporarily perching in Newburyport,
Massachusetts, at the Somersby Landing Sculpture
Park through the summer of 2007. It is still for
sale and looking to find a permanent roost.
“It should be interesting to see how people take to
the next sculpture we get from Edward,” says
Shilale, whose architectural offices became known as
“the building with the beautiful bird.” As an ardent
supporter of art in public spaces, Shilale is
looking forward to helping to promote the works of
more Hudson Valley artists in the coming years.
Michael Shilale believes good architecture, like
good art, music, literature, etc. can make a
tremendous difference in our lives and our

seeks to enhance the lives of those who live, learn,
