New City -
Michael Shilale, founder and managing partner of
Michael Shilale Architects, LLP has announced an
ambitious slate of initiatives for the
Westchester/Mid-Hudson chapter of AIA (American
Institute of Architects), the
third largest
chapter in the state of New York.
“I’d like to accomplish a lot during my tenure this
year, building upon the wonderful work of past
presidents,” says Shilale, the
first Rockland County president of AIAWMH chapter.
Top issues on the agenda include: working on
sustainability for the chapter by increasing the
membership base, maintaining a leadership position
as a premiere provider of continuing education units
(CEU), improving the functionality and updates on
the chapter’s website, and increasing the frequency
of e-communiqués to the membership. Shilale, whose
firm has been the recipient of several design awards
for their work on two Rockland County projects – The
Kathy Lukens
Living Center
and Camp Venture’s Therapeutic Pool,
both in
Sparkill - is also working on
creating position papers; articulating his desire to
“equipping architects to improve; to practice
professionally, effectively, and profitably.”
Shilale, who is an active proponent of AIA’s
national agenda; creating a better quality of life
for all Americans through secure and efficient
design, protection of public health and safety in
the built environment, and construction of quality
affordable housing, is interested in encouraging the
chapter’s
500 plus
members (from
seven New York counties)
to attend
special area events, and other networking and
learning opportunities throughout the year.
Locally, Shilale is interested in seeing the New
City, Haverstraw and Spring Valley downtown
revitalization, and other affordable housing
projects move forward. “Our approach to any project
is to make a difference in people’s lives,” says
Shilale, paraphrasing Winston Churchill’s belief:
“We shape our
buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.”
Along with his position at the AIA, Shilale is also
involved with various area organizations, as President
of the Board of Directors of the Rockland Housing
Action Coalition, Inc., as a member of Art in Public
Places Committee for Rockland County (former
Chairman) and the Long Island University Board of
Overseers.
Michael Shilale AIA, LEED along with his partner
John Cirilli AIA, has grown
